Damen could hardly mask his astonishment at the huge domed room that lay
beyond. Two stairways snaked around the sides to join as a landing on the next
floor, lightless candles lining the ascending steps. An ornate circular rug that
seemed almost to be made of stained glass covered the majority of the floor in the
room. Sunlight streamed in from somewhere higher up, illuminating the crystal
chandelier that hung down with a rainbow of flashing colors. It might have been a

The metallic scent of that life-giving liquid was heavy on the stagnant air, damp
upon the dusty soil, and soaking into his hair. The boy, no older than eighteen,
took shuddering breaths, inching painfully slow to a sitting position, grimacing at
the dull ache in his torn arm.
Then he dared to look up, bleary eyes slowly swimming into focus. And almost
